The purpose of the paper is, first, to discuss the reasons why and how Delacroix' Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement, was particularly well-known. Second, we want to know whether the identity of these women was closer to algeria reality of that time or was rather a mere construction. the methodology to be followed is drawn from art criticism which attempts to pinpoint the ideological grids of the painter's artwork within Said's orientalist theory. It will be followed by an analysis of the content and aesthetics of the artwork as well as by an interpretation of its message. Finally, the discussion intends to highlight the divergence of views and the role of arts in identity construction.
