The Knowledge Economy In Algeria: State Of The Art And Challenges

Authors : Hamza Zakaria .

Abstract

The aim of this work is to show the importance and the role of the knowledge economy in the competitiveness of companies and the growth of national economies. The success of a Knowledge-based Economic Strategy (KBE) calls for creating an environment conducive to innovation and creativity that stimulates competition and guarantees intellectual and industrial property rights. Over the past few years, Algeria has adopted a development strategy based on the knowledge-based economy, to boost economic growth, and this must be further pulled out by highly knowledgeable sectors. After examining the various pillars of this New Economy, the article shows that despite the considerable efforts undertaken by Algeria, the expected results more particularly on a qualitative level have not been achieved. The level of knowledge competitiveness is even lower. The field of research and development is far from fulfilling the demands of competitiveness and integration within the knowledge-based economy because of the obsolete nature of the knowledge gained. Algeria must establish these efforts in this field, and that the state must play the orchestra role in that vision of the information economy.
