System For The Protection Of Confidentiality Under The 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention: Challenges Of Confidence And Effectiveness

Abstract

This study deals with the system of protection of confidential information under the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993, since ot is one of the most important aspects addressed by the Convention as well as its crucial importance for essective verification of compliance with its provisions. States Parties and other stakeholders need strong safeguards to prevent the disclosure of confidential information and data circulating in the context of the implementation and data circulating in the context of the implementation of CWC, whether it relates to national security or to the business and chemical trade. Similarly, Member States should be assured that verification, on- site inspections and other monitoring and oversight bodies will not seek further relevant information, and that the information obtained will remain confidential if necessary.
