What Critical Thinking For What Purpose? Some Reflections On Criticality In Academic English Contexts

Abstract

This article is an attempt to explore the question of what type of criticality is needed in academic English contexts at university. We shall first examine a number of definitions and approaches to critical thinking, and discuss how this concept is framed into the curriculum. Then we shall look at how critical thinking is taught in English language classrooms at university and lastly, how Critical Pedagogy can address issues of critical thinking and respond to current educational challenges.
