With the spread of English across the globe and whatever its overlap with other languages, there has been a fascinating debate over the years to how this world language has been accompanied by ever growing numbers of people studying at university level through the medium of English as a second language whether in their own country or in English speaking countries as overseas students. A main part of university study continues to be the lecture. 1 Academic listening skills are thus necessary elements of communicative competence in a university environment. The aim of this paper is twofold: to present findings of a study which aimed at describing authentic teaching in some Algerian university contexts as it is perceived by students (ST) and to put forward a review of the research related to second language lecture comprehension. Furthermore, it gives an account of the latest findings related to the lecture comprehension process, lecture discourse, and lecture input variable.
