Abstract

Following the military occupation of Algiers. Large numbers of European civilians emigrated to the new colony. Most of those who came to Algeria between 1830 and 1870 were looking for a fortune and were deprived of private capital, hence they could not have thrown themselves into commerce or industry. Agriculture was most suitable for them. Especially when free land concessions had been promised to all colons.
