Education And Marriage Of Women In Colonial Algeria

Authors : Bouaziz Amina .

Abstract

Education and marriage are two important subjects in the Algerian society as in any other society. Algerian history marked many developments before and after the French colonization, the Algerian conservative society tried to maintain its values and resist the French policies that meant to make Algeria a French province not only politically but rather culturally. The French tried to impose their educational system on Algerians from the very beginning in an attempt to substitute the Algerian identity with the French one and then to impose its marriage laws that were totally different from the Islamic laws Algerians believed in. This article discusses Algerian women’s status during the French colonization; it deals with women’s education and marriage before the French arrival and after the colonization. The article used historical analysis of the events and depended on interviews of women who participated in the War of Independence.
