Résumé

This work aims to provide an answer to and reflect on some questions related to the scientific-technical translation and the machine translation. On the one hand, this document goes into the different stages of the translation process, who can perform a scientific-technical translation, the training a translator of a scientific-technical text should receive, and the linguistic, terminological and grammatical characteristics of this type of texts. On the other hand, the differences between machine translation and human translation are presented. In the same time, this paper explains the nature of translation memory software and that of other computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools. It describes their functionalities and where their limitations lie, and it presents the experience of some members of this group with specific CAT tools. It also details the documentation process from a translator’s perspective and explains how it has changed since the inception of information technology and the internet, focusing on the use of electronic dictionaries and databases.
