Abstract This article is an analytical study of a very well-known linguistic phenomenon, i.e. "Loanwords" in general, and borrowed words from Arabic into English in particular. Actually, most of the European Languages are teeming with terms, and even expressions, of Arabic origin. What is the exact definition of a loanword and what are its different subdivisions? What are the modifications and the transformations the loanwords are subjected to before becoming acceptable within the receptive language? Are there some particular norms, strategies or techniques adopted by the European languages to borrow such words from Arabic and for what reasons? This article tries to look into such questions through the analysis of a series of terms and expressions selected from different sources and mainly from our corpus: Arabic Contributions to The English Vocabulary, by Habeeb Salloum & James Peters. In this regard, we have tried to be as concise and precise as possible with comparisons in case of necessity to show the Arabic origin of such words that enriched greatly the English dictionaries in various important fields such as to cite but a few: chemistry, medicine, agriculture, archeology, language and literature, mathematics, botany, trade, transportation as well as measures and weights, religion and finally law. The study ends with a conclusion throwing light on strategies and techniques used in order to make such words acceptable within the receptive language. Key Words: Loanwords – Source Language – Target Language– Acceptability.
