ABSTRACT : Human beings are likely to prefer economy in terms of the energy spent to produce utterances when speaking. A common manifestation of such a phenomenon is what we call ‘idgham’. The latterchanges sounds and results in the emergence of new pronunciations of words. Generally, adjacent linguistic structures are concerned with idgham, but it may occur inside the same word. Arabic, either classical or modern, widely exploited the potential of idgham to make its pronunciation as economic as possible. The Quran, delivered in Arabic, is full of instances of idgham. Actually all Quranic readings use it. The author of this thesis explored the use of idgham in two out of the seven Quranic readings, namely:the reading of Nafi’ Al Madani and that of Hamza Al Kufi. He aimed at investigating the extent of use of this phenomenon in each reading and the reasons that led to reduce or increase it. He concluded that the differences between the two readings when using idgham is due to the differences that existedbetween the pronunciations of different Arabic dialects of many words. He also observed that the reading of Hamza by the way of Khalled is full of idgham, the aim was offering easiness. On the other hand, the reading of Nafi’ by the way of Warchfavours explicitness and full pronunciation of sounds.
