Translators of literary texts encounter different challenges ranging from linguistic to cultural. Transferring allusions are among the challenges that need special care from translators and this because of their cultural specificity. The main purpose of this study is to shed the light on the strategies used in the translation of allusions from Arabic to French in the novel of Noble Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz “Derives sur le Nil” (Tharthara fawq Al Nil) . Leppihalme’s (1997) classification of allusions to Proper Noun allusions (P.N) and Key Phrase allusions (K.P.) and the different translation strategies proposed are used as a framework for the study. The study shows that the translator makes use of mainly two strategies: The strategy of retention in rendering proper noun allusions and that of adding some guidance or a detailed explanation. Concerning the translation of key phrase allusions, literal translation, adding extra allusive guidance and additional information via footnotes are the strategies the frequently used.
