Does Democracy Level Effect On Corruption Size? An Empirical Study Using Panel Data

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the impact of the level of democracy on the corruption perceptions index, throughout applying to 153 countries during the period 2012-2017 using the panel data. The study came out that 97,11% of the changes in the corruption index and thus the size of corruption can be explained by the indexes of democracy, the index of control of corruption and the size of GDP per capita. It also found that both Functioning of government index and the political participation have a statistically significant negative impact on the corruption index. Likewise, indexes of the electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties and political culture have no statistically significant impact on the corruption index .The study eventually found that both GDP per capita and control of corruption index had a positive impact on the corruption.
