The Ideological Implications of Agentless Passivisation in President Macron’s Declaration on “Audin’s Death” (2018) on the Franco-Algerian Memory Conflict

Résumé: The core thrust of the article is to examine the ideological implications of President Macron’s utilization of agentless passivization in his declaration on the “Audin’s death” (2018). Being the first French president to admit France’s responsibility for grave abuses ranging from illegal detention and systematic torture to murder, Emmanuel Macron was cautious enough not implicate the responsibility of any particular official institution in those encroachments. President Macron, thus, appealed to agentless passivisation to pay a lip service to those who expected those recognitions without going as far as ascribing responsibility for those violations to any specific entity within the French establishment. By critically analyzing President Macron’s declaration, the study at hand seeks to conduct a contrapuntal reading of Macron’s claims to demystify the ideological implications of the usage of agentless passivisation on the substance and the worth of President Macron’s recognitions and hence on the Franco-Algerian rapprochement mainly over memory conflict.

Résumé: Cet article examine les relations ambiguës entre la France et les États-Unis, mettant en valeur les conflits persistants après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ces dissensions, liées à la politique coloniale et à la stratégie au Proche-Orient, ont non seulement exclu le général de Gaulle de la conférence de Yalta mais ont aussi façonné la diplomatie française. Au cœur de cette dynamique, l'affaire de Sakiet Sidi Youssef en Tunisie émerge comme un point crucial. Les tensions entre la France et la Tunisie, exacerbées par cet événement médiatisé, ont conduit le président Bourguiba à solliciter l'aide des États-Unis. Cette crise, sur fond de guerre d'Algérie, révèle l'influence des parlementaires français dans la formulation de la politique étrangère. En explorant ces relations, l'article met en lumière la complexité des enjeux diplomatiques de l'époque, où les interventions des députés ont joué un rôle crucial, particulièrement dans les contextes de la crise tunisienne et de la guerre d'Algérie.
